A boardroom review is a method that allows a table to evaluate its performance in a thorough manner. It helps table members identify the elements of longevity, as also weaknesses in their connections, leadership relationships and culture that could cause both practical and social changes. It is also a way to ensure that those who pay to join tables are adequately equipped to carry out their duties.
This research field is developing and there are a number challenges. The first is that the current evidence from empirical studies is mixed on the way that dissent affects boards and how they function. Some studies have positive (Zona 2016,) curvilinear, non-significant or mixed results. Others find negative (Brown Buchholtz And Butts 2019, Heemskerk Heemskerk and Wats, Minichilli, et al. 2012) relationships between dissent and the performance of a board’s task.
The literature does not offer more insight into the factors that influence the dynamics of dissension. Future research needs to develop an integrated theoretical framework to understand this governance phenomenon. This could include the use and application of configurational methods (Federo and Saz-Carranza 2018, Schiell, Lewellyn and Yan 2023) to help researchers better understand how board attributes process, processes, and contexts relate to necessary and sufficient causality in governance phenomenon.
In addition, many studies use the narrow definition of dissent and do not present precise measurements. These studies are therefore susceptible to measurement error. Therefore, it’s important to develop more robust and precise dissent measurement techniques.
